AVANT-GARDE

"This French term refers to any form of music that detracts from convention and tradition. Caring little for commercial potential, public accessibility or mainstream critical praise, avant-garde musicians and composers are a breed apart. In short, they follow unique muse that often has little to do with what is currently popular. The avant-garde style can occur in many kinds of music, but most often is found in classic music, jazz, and more recently, electronic music."
